Enhanced Barrier Precautions (EBP) are new infection prevention and control recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to protect residents from multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs). Residents in skilled nursing often need more hands-on, close contact care, and studies have shown that most transmission of resistant organisms occurs during this type of close care. Resistant organisms can cause serious infections, are difficult to treat, and can spread rapidly. In this session, the presenter will review the focus of EBPs, including the targeted use of gown and gloves during high-contact care for residents at highest risk for colonization or infection with resistant organisms. Audience members will discover resources for incorporating EBP interventions into resident care.
